Stichting Radboud universitair medisch centrum (RADBOUDUMC) is one of the largest academic teaching hospitals in the Netherlands. The diabetes research in the Department of Internal Medicine focuses on impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia and the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. Both topics are more and more interrelated and strongly emphasize translational research. There are extensive collaborations with the departments of experimental radiology and nuclear medicine and with the laboratory of experimental internal medicine. The research is embedded in the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS).

Our group has a strong track record in translational research and is considered one of the leading groups on brain research with respect to impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia and studying effects of hypoglycaemia in humans on other tissue responses. Our laboratory on experimental internal medicine is embedded within the department of Internal Medicine and world leading in studying innate immunity, immunometabolism and role of epigenetic changes on trained immunity (head prof. Mihai Netea).

Our main tasks will be to study underlying mechanisms that explain the link between hypoglycaemia and cardiovascular disease and to explore potential biomarkers for severe hypoglycaemia. We will partake in discussing the outcomes of the statistical analysis of the constructed database and in engaging with stakeholders to agree on classification of hypoglycaemia. We will also provide overall leadership and coordination to the whole consortium.

Dr Bastiaan E. de Galan

MD PhD, is internist with a long-lasting interest in hypoglycaemia and impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia, leading a group of PhD students on studying the pathogenesis and treatment of impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia. He is past secretary of the Dutch Association for the Study of Diabetes and currently serves on scientific advisory boards for the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation and Diabetes UK and as reviewer for the EFSD and JDRF. He is also an active member of the International Hypoglycaemia Study Group.

Prof. Cees J. Tack

MD PhD, is professor of diabetology, with a strong track record in translational research on insulin resistance in relation to fat tissue inflammation, the sympathetic nervous system and vascular bed. He is involved in several national and international committees on diabetes, past member-elect to the Executive Council of the EASD (2010-2016) and Chair of post-graduate education committee for the EASD (2010-2013). He also was on the programme committee for the 2017 EASD annual meeting.

Dr Rinke Stienstra

PhD, is a nutrional scientist by education. He finished his PhD on PPARγ, obesity and inflammation, and has since then become an international leader on the role of the inflammasome and caspase-1 in obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes. He is recipient of the prestigious EASD Rising Star Award (2014) and of a VIDI grant from the The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Clementine Verhulst

PhD candidate. She just finished medical school to start on Hypo-RESOLVE as of 23 July 2018.
